A province best known for growing spuds is also now able to produce buds now that Health Canada has given the green light to Canada’s Island Garden Inc. to sell medical cannabis.

“We’ve had a production licence to cultivate cannabis for few months now. We’ve had several crops that we’ve been able to harvest,” president and co-owner Edwin Jewell told the CBC. “Of course the whole objective is not just to grow crops but to be able to sell it and to be where we are right now is very, very encouraging.”

The 2,160-square-metre LP in Charlottetown is expected to have products ready to sell within a few days and mailed to patients with a valid prescription. Federal approval was received Feb. 7, and the company currently has 13 full-time and five part-time staff.

The company’s initial flower products include three different strains of varying potency.

Currently around 129,000 people are registered with licensed producers in Canada.
